Giddy Up — Red Pill is Headed to Texas

The countdown is on for ODTUG’s Kscope17 in San Antonio, Texas and there is a packed lineup of impressive content, fun events, and a focus on emerging technologies.

We know it will be tough to decide which sessions to attend but make sure you save some time to check out Red Pill Analytic’s sessions, listed below.

Analyze This

Red Pill Analytics’ reach will also extend outside of the classroom this year. As Kscope17’s Analytics Sponsor, we will be using live polling, IOT technologies, and beacon data to paint a picture of the conference in real-time. We will answer questions like: Which sessions are best attended? Which location is the busiest? How many sessions are people attending? Analytics will be on display throughout the conference venue. Visit us near registration and at displays near session rooms in the Grand Oaks Foyer and Wildflower Hallway as we dial you into the fun with live polling. All we’re offering is the truth. Nothing more.

We will also host a special session about the data gathering process on Tuesday: A Lambda Architecture in the Cloud: A Kscope17 Case Study. We look forward to sharing more with you about the analytics we gather throughout the weeks and the unique and innovative ways we are using that data to tell a story.

Don’t be bound by conference tracks

In addition to our sponsorship, Red Pill Analytics has three speakers delivering sessions at Kscope17. Why should you attend a Red Pill Analytics Business Intelligence/Big Data session at Kscope17? Especially if these sessions do not fall in the track you are planning on attending? The ability to communicate with data in a visual way is a skill that is critical in any professional’s toolbelt. Are you interested in learning more about Oracle Data Visualization? Or are you in a pattern of connecting to an Essbase cube, pulling down information in Excel and mashing different spreadsheets together? Then it is imperative that you attend one of our Data Visualization sessions at Kscope17 and to learn to combine these processes in one place using Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC).

Must See Sessions

MONDAY

Architecture Live: Designing an Analytics Platform for the Big Data Era
Jean-Pierre Dijcks, Oracle Corporation
Co-presenter(s):
Stewart Bryson, Red Pill Analytics
When: June 26 — Monday: Session 1 , 10:30-11:30 am
Topic: Data Warehousing & Big Data — Subtopic: Data Architecture

Don’t miss the Architecture Live experience! In this interactive session, you’ll witness two industry experts digitally illustrating data-driven architectures live, with input and feedback from the audience.

Kafka, Lambda, and Streaming Analytics will be all covered. We’ll tell you what these words mean and more importantly how they affect the choices we make building an enterprise architecture. With the Oracle Information Management Reference Architecture as the backdrop, we’ll clarify and delineate the different components involved in delivering big data, fast data, and all the gray area in between. The Architecture Live experience will be fun and different, and we’ll all learn something along the way.

Kafka, Data Streaming and Analytic Microservices
Stewart Bryson, Red Pill Analytics
When:
June 26 — Monday: Session 2 , 11:45 am — 12:45 pm
Topic: Data Warehousing & Big Data — Subtopic: Data Architecture

While traditional data warehouses excel at sourcing data from enterprise applications, they usually fail at handling the volume, velocity, and variety of data for modern analytics applications relying on big and fast data. Instead of modeling these data sources into a system that doesn’t fit, let’s apply a new software design pattern to analytics: microservices. Microservices are small, independent applications — building blocks that provide only a distinct subset of functionality — that can be stacked together to build an end-to-end platform.

In this presentation, we’ll explore using Apache Kafka and the Confluent Platform 3.0 as the data streaming hub for ingesting data bound for downstream analytic applications: an enterprise data warehouse, a Hadoop cluster for batch processing, and lightweight, purpose-built microservices in the cloud or on-premises. Experience the next generation of analytic platforms.

Oracle Data Visualization for the Finance Analyst
Kevin McGinley, Red Pill Analytics
Co-presenter(s):
Tim German, Qubix
When: June 26 — Monday: Session 3 , 2:00–3:00 pm
Topic: Data Visualization & Advanced Analytics — Subtopic: Oracle Data Visualization

Many analysts within Finance are used to manipulating spreadsheets and waiting for enhancements to Essbase cubes to produce reports that need to be shared with their management or peers. This session will demonstrate how all analysts within Finance can get immediate value from Oracle Data Visualization (DV) and decrease their reliance on overly complex spreadsheets. From its ability to connect to many different kinds of data sources, wrangle multiple data sources into a usable format, and visualize insights that would be otherwise hard to see in a table, Oracle DV provides analysts an extra layer of functionality they can easily learn and use without IT intervention.

Using R for Data Profiling
Michelle Kolbe, Red Pill Analytics
When:
June 26 — Monday: Session 3 , 2:00-3:00 pm
Topic: BI & Reporting — Subtopic: Other BI and Reporting

The benefits of knowing your data before embarking on a BI project are endless. Sure, you can buy a tool to help with this, or you could use R, an open-source tool. This session will dig into methods for using R to connect to your data source to see visual and tabular analyses of your data set. You’ll learn how to find missing data, outliers, and unexpected values. If you don’t know R or you are wanting to learn more functions within R, you’ll benefit from this session.

TUESDAY

A Lambda Architecture in the Cloud: A Kscope17 Case Study
Stewart Bryson, Red Pill Analytics and Kevin McGinley, Red Pill Analytics
When: Jun 27, 2017, Tuesday: Session 8, 2:00–3:00 pm
Topic:
Data Visualization & Advanced Analytics Subtopic: Other

A Lambda Architecture enables data-driven organizations by simultaneously providing batch and speed processing layers to satisfy the overall appetite for analytics and reporting. But building a Lambda architecture is not easy, usually requiring all of the following: a universal ingestion layer, an immutable data store as a system of record, one or more data processing layers that can satisfy batch and speed requirements, and a serving layer that enables data-driven decision making.

In this session, we’ll demonstrate how Cloud platforms can supercharge the delivery of a capable Lambda architecture. Our case study will be the IoT data generated by Kscope17 attendees including the beacon from their badges, as well as other devices capturing the results of live polling.

Expanding Your Data-Driven Story: The Next Chapter
Mike Durran, Oracle Corporation
Co-presenter(s):
Stewart Bryson, Red Pill Analytics

Topic: Data Visualization & Advanced Analytics — Subtopic: Oracle Data Visualization

Oracle Data Visualization (DV) makes it easy to get insight from your data. This stunningly visual and intuitive product enables you to access, blend, and wrangle a variety of sources — including spreadsheets, databases, and applications — and tell the story of your data. In this session, learn about the power of data storytelling and the latest capabilities of Oracle DV (including details of product roadmap) to create compelling analytic narratives, including how you can rapidly apply advanced analytic techniques to gain insights previously only accessible to advanced users. Learn about how Oracle DV has been used in real-life scenarios to gain insight and improve business performance.

WEDNESDAY
