Data Streaming and Analytic Microservices [UGF6162]
Stewart Bryson, Owner and Co-founder, Red Pill Analytics
Sunday, Sep 18, 1:00 p.m. — 1:45 p.m. | Moscone South — 301

Although traditional data warehouses excel at sourcing data from enterprise applications, they usually fail at handling the volume, velocity, and variety of new sources of information. Instead of modeling these datasources into a system that does not fit, apply new software design patterns to analytics: microservices. Microservices are small, independent applications — building blocks that provide distinct functionality and are optimized for the task at hand. In this presentation, Apache Kafka is used as the data streaming hub for ingesting data bound for one or more analytic platforms: an enterprise data warehouse; a Hadoop system for batch processing; and lightweight, purpose-built microservices in the cloud or on premises.

The rumors are not true — kicking off data discovery within your organization does not have to consume time, personnel resources, and costs. By defining pointed use cases; supplementing your existing Oracle technologies; and dedicating a small, strategic team to the effort, your data discovery initiative can be well under way within a few short weeks. This session walks you through how one of the nation’s top cancer centers leveraged its existing Oracle and statistical platforms to get its data discovery initiative up and running with streamlined personnel and budgetary resources. Attendees will gain the knowledge they need to get data discovery up and running in their own organizations, no matter their personnel or budgetary constraints.
