Countdown to Coffee at Kscope19

It’s that time of the year again. Kscope19, one of the best Oracle User Group conferences of the year, is merely weeks away. If you’re only going to one conference this year, definitely take this one into consideration.

Why Kscope?

If you are heading to Kscope, you’re probably already an Oracle aficionado. This is where you want to be because you’ll hear the latest and greatest Oracle updates. Plus, for the first time, they’ll be offering free proctored Oracle certification testing.

Not to mention that this year Kscope is located in Downtown Seattle, where you can dabble in excellent coffee. Or, go the tourist route and see the sights at Pike’s Place Market, the Space Needle, or the Seattle Aquarium.

Come Visit Us!

Don’t forget to stop by one of our sessions at Kscope. We love meeting friends, colleagues, and fellow data gurus. Check out Red Pill’s presentations below to find out where we’ll be.

Data Engineering and the Death of Visual ETL
Track:
Big Data & Data Warehousing
Presenter
: Stewart Bryson, Red Pill Analytics
Time: Monday, June 24, 2019 (11:45 AM — 12:45 PM)
Room:
310, Level 3

Session Summary: A funny thing happened on the way to modern, data-driven analytics: we ditched the GUI for ETL development. There are drawbacks to moving data using code instead of clicks, especially for organizations heavily invested in visual tools. But writing code has an upside as well.

In this presentation, we’ll explore the data engineering discipline and how it compares to conventional ETL. We’ll look at classic batch as well as modern streaming use cases, and we’ll consider DataOps requirements around testing and delivery where code really shines. We’ll do it all inside of an interactive notebook.

Architecture Live: Cloud Data Warehousing in an On-Premises World
Track: Big Data & Data Warehousing
Primary Presenter: Michael Rainey, Snowflake Computing
Co-Presenter: Stewart Bryson, Red Pill Analytics
Time: June 25, 2019 (10:00 AM — 11:00 AM)
Room: 310, Level 3

Session Summary: Cloud data warehousing is not a new concept, but why is a data warehouse built for the cloud so much different from its on-premises predecessors? In this “Architecture Live” session, you’ll hear from two industry experts as they describe the current state of on-premises data warehousing, including the good, bad, and the ugly. Then they’ll dive into what makes a cloud data warehouse architecture so much different and more effective. With input from the audience, they’ll draw up and discuss each architecture “live.” Examples of various cloud data warehouse technologies will be described, including Oracle Autonomous DW, Snowflake, and others. Attendees will leave empowered with knowledge that will help prepare them for the future of data warehousing.

Oracle Groundbreakers Lunch and Learn: Business Intelligence, Data Visualization, and Analytics Panel

Machine Learning Live — Let’s Build a Taxi Fare Predictor
Track: Emerging Technologies
Presenter: Stewart Bryson, Red Pill Analytics
Co-Presenter: Bjoern Rost, Pythian
Time: Tuesday, June 25, 2019 (3:45 PM — 4:45 PM)
Room: 620, Level 6

Session Summary: Regardless of what you’ve seen or heard, machine learning is not that complicated; simple but valuable use cases that extend traditional analytical capabilities can be easily unlocked. In this session, we’ll build a prediction model for taxi fares based on existing public data. Watch as we explore the dataset, derive estimates with basic analytics, and then train our model with several iterations of linear regression algorithms to outperform those estimates. You’ll understand the methods, tools, and algorithms used in this predictor, and you’ll witness the live development and training of our machine learning model. Are you ready to finally understand what machine learning is all about?

Hands-On Lab: The New Face of Oracle Analytics
Track:
Essbase
Presenter: Stewart Bryson, Red Pill Analytics
Co-Presenter: Mike Jelen, Red Pill Analytics
Time: Wednesday, June 26, 2019 (2:15 PM — 4:30 PM)
Room: 606, Level 6

Session Summary: We are creatures of habit. Oracle Analytics is a mature solution, and inertia may cause us to stay the course regarding the content we build and how we build it. But is inertia causing us to settle for “just good enough?” Now is the time to experience modern cloud-based data and analytics tools.

Join us for a hands-on lab using Oracle Analytics Cloud as the centerpiece for developing a data-driven culture. Experience the difference developing visualizations using cloud-native data warehouse technologies including Snowflake and Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse services. We think you’ll agree: this is not your grandparents’ BI solution.

Deep Dive: Visualization Showcase
Track:
EPM Reporting, BI Analytics, and Data Visualization
Primary Presenter: Mike Jelen, Red Pill Analytics
Time: Thursday, June 27, 2019 (9:30 AM — 11:00 AM)
Room: 612, Level 6
Panelists:
Becky Wagner, US-Analytics
Tim Vlamis, Vlamis Software Solutions
Andy Tauro and Margaret Motsi, Performance Architects
Neviana Zhgaba, GE Digital
Teal Sexton, UC Berkeley

Session Summary:We all appreciate the art of data visualizations — creating beautiful graphics to help tell a story. In our Thursday deep dive session called “Visualization Showcase,” we will have industry leaders share their favorite visualizations that they’ve built and explain how they were able to create their works of informational art. Join us for what is sure to be a great time with funny stories, beautiful graphics, and tips for better visualizations.
